COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are you affiliated with any literary agency, and will working with you help me find an agent or publisher?

A: Though I maintain contact with several agents, and employ one for my own writing, I do not act as a go-between, nor do I refer projects. It would be unethical to imply that I can get your work represented or published. Approaching publishing professionals with the most polished manuscript possible, however, can make all the difference.

You should avoid any editing service that makes promises or even implies they can get your work published.

Q: Will I be scammed?

A: Unfortunately — like writing — the first step of working with an editor takes some blind faith. You need to choose an editor that you feel comfortable with on a human level, and follow your gut instinct if something seems wrong. For instance, some of the larger services will bombard you with spam if you even query them, others might pass your information on to marketing companies. Word Pill does neither: it is one-hundred percent discreet, and non-intrusive.

Q: How does PAYMENT work?

A: Ideally through Paypal. To see how that works, press here. You do not need a Paypal account - I will invoice you and you can pay Paypal through your credit card. Otherwise, I accept personal checks, though to protect myself I do need to wait until they clear to begin work. I take half the fee upfront, and the second half after the work has been completed.

Q: How exactly does the editing PROCESS work?

A: Of course it varies depending on the type of project you have, in addition to your exact needs, but for a completed novel, the process looks something like this: After sending your manuscript over email, I read it to get a sense of the narrative structure. Then I go through it again line-by-line making suggestions for vocabulary improvement, all the while recommending places to cut, as well as spots that need clarification. You will receive your manuscript with all changes visible in the ‘track changes’ function of Word, as well as an editorial letter detailing Big Picture concerns.
